We have a commitment to work with good practice with all young people in our care.  All our leaders involved are subject to clearance through the Disclosure and Barring Service. We have Designated Persons for Safeguarding who are ready to listen, to be a voice and to deal with child protection issues.

The Church has appointed Nigel Pain and Jennifer Barkell as the Designated Safeguarding Persons.

Nigel Pain

Nigel and his family are regular attenders at Hope.

He is one of two safeguarding officers for the church. Nigel has worked in the Criminal Justice field for 35 years and until recently worked as a Community Chaplain supporting young men as they come to the end of their sentence in Prison and then through the prison gates as they return to their community. He also volunteers with Spiritulized (YFC) working with young people in the South Hams as well as being one of their safeguarding officers and a member of their Council of Reference.

Nigel is married to Niki and they have 2 children, both at University.

Nigel and Niki came to Hope after moving from Kingsbridge Family Church. If you hear someone singing slightly out of tune but with gusto it might well be Nigel, or he may, on occasion, serve you tea or coffee after the service.

Jennifer AshurstJennifer Barkell

Jenny lives with her husband, Neil, their baby daughter Erica and their four guinea pigs in Tavistock. She moved to Devon from Surrey in 2008 and started attending Hope at the same time.

As well as being one of the Designated Safeguarding Persons, Jenny also heads up the team that control the worship projection and she is a member of WAG (Worship Action Group). She is a regular member of a house group and enjoys the discussions and social interactions.

Jenny works as Learning Support Assistant at a nearby primary school and in her spare time she enjoys running and spending time with Neil.
